A Lingering Fight

THE BLARE OF THE alarm I set startles me awake. I hurry and slap the alarm clock, silencing my dark room again. It’s a little before five in the morning. While I would have normally considered getting up this early absolutely insane, I have to spy on Avery. I’ve never seen him come out of the forest at any other time but freaking early in the morning.

I roll out of my bed to try and convince myself not to fall back asleep. Getting up this early when I’m so tired is torture; my eyelids feel like they’re glued shut. I inch my way toward my window. I keep my light off so that I can see as far outside of my window as possible in the dark.

Straining my eyes, I stare out my window for at least a half hour. I don’t see any signs of anyone moving out there or anything near the forest at all. There’s just the towering trees, black in the dark, and an empty field separating the forest from my grandparents’ roses.

Grabbing my guitar, I prepare myself for many early mornings to come, and start toying with the idea of creating a new song. Never thought I’d have so little to do that I’d stoop to something like this, waking up early just to see what some boy’s doing. But he really pissed me off yesterday.

If there’s any chance Avery’s going to show up, I need to know. He never admitted to going into the forest yesterday, but if I see him out there again, I’m going to run after him and find out for myself just what the hell he’s doing.
